Sample Stereos

Stereo system notes :

• Sizing : All stereos are the same dimensions 82-02, with the exception of the 93-96 Camaro stereos, which are slightly larger.  Most units will physically fit most 82-02 F-cars and others.

• Brackets : The brackets that mount the stereo to the console & dash differ between years, but are interchangeable between stereos. 93-02 Firebird & 97-02 Camaro stereos have non-removable brackets.

• Plugs : The largest difference in changes from 82-02 are the plugs and connectors.  Most units will work in any year if you change the connectors.

  • 82-88 stereos (left picture below) use the larger connectors with an additional 2-pin connector for memory. 

  • The 89-02 stereos (right picture below) use the smaller connectors, along with a smaller antenna plug.

  • 95 and newer stereos equipped with a factory CD changer have an additional connector on the rear (right picture below, plug on right).

• Bose and Monsoon units : Bose and Monsoon units are the optional "Top of the Line" system.  Bose and Monsoon units are not interchangeable with any other systems. 

  • Bose Units : Bose units produce no power from the stereo itself, but use separate amplifiers.  Many of the head units have the Bose insignia worn off.  You can identify a Bose radio by it's backside.  The Bose unit will not have a amplifier heat sink.

    • 90-92 Camaro 4 Speaker Bose : 1 amp & speaker in LH kick panel, 1 amp and speaker in RH kick panel, 2 amps and speakers on trunk fold-down rear compartment unit.

    • 93-96 Camaro 3 Speaker Bose : 1 amp & speaker in LH door, 1 amp & speaker in RH door, 1 amp and speaker in LH rear 1/4 panel.

    • 95-96 Camaro 5 Speaker Bose : 1 amp & speaker in LH door, 1 amp & speaker in RH door, 1-3 channel amp and speaker in LH rear 1/4 panel, 1 subwoofer in LH passenger seating area, & 1 subwoofer in RH passenger seating area.

   

  • Monsoon Units : All 10-speaker systems.  Monsoon head units only power the from door tweeters.  The rest of the speakers are power by one single individual amp that drives the other 8 speakers.  The speaker impedances range from 1.2 ohms to 10 ohms.

    • 97-02 Firebird Monsoon 10 speaker system : 1 tweeter in LH door panel, 1 tweeter in RH door panel (both powered by head unit); 1 dual voice coil speaker in LH door, 1 dual voice coil speaker in RH door, 1 dual coil subwoofer in LH passenger seating area, 1 dual voice coil subwoofer in RH passenger seating area, 1 tweeter and 1 full range speaker in LH rear 1/4 trim panel & 1 tweeter and 1 full range speaker in RH rear 1/4 trim panel all powered by single amplifier in RH rear 1/4 panel.

    • 97-02 Camaro Monsoon 6/8 speaker system :  1 dual voice coil speaker in LH door, 1 dual voice coil speaker in RH door, 1 dual coil subwoofer in LH passenger seating area, 1 dual voice coil subwoofer in RH passenger seating area, 1 tweeter and 1 full range speaker in LH rear 1/4 trim panel & 1 tweeter and 1 full range speaker in RH rear 1/4 trim panel all powered by single amplifier in RH rear 1/4 panel.
