In 1990, GM installed a driver's side airbag in
all Camaros and & Firebirds. The system consisted of a Self Inflatable
Restraint (The airbag), some collision detection sensors, and SIR computer.
In 1993, GM implemented a passenger side airbag in all their vehicles. In
1996, the SIR system used an integrated collision detection sensor and module
(computer) in one single unit. Every component in GM's SIR system is identified
with a bright yellow wire coating.
- 90-92 systems : 1 driver's air
bag, 3 impact sensors (1 on radiator support, 1 on center floorboard
under A/C duct & 1 on center floorboard under console) & 1
electronic computer module behind dash.
- 93-95 systems : 1 driver's air bag
& 1 passenger air bag, 3 impact sensors (1 on radiator support, 1
under cowl over the steering column & 1 on center floorboard under
console) & 1 electronic computer module behind dash.
- 96-02 systems : 1 driver's air bag
& 1 passenger air bag, 1 impact module (which acts as the sensor and
computer) located on floorboard under center console. 2000 and
newer systems use airbags that deploy with less force.
