-
OPEN - The ring gear spins
the carrier, power is transmitted through 4 spider gears that mesh with
each other, but only 1 axle transfers the power.
-
POSI/Limited Slip (Clutch type)
- The ring gear spins the carrier, a series of springs forces the 2
spider gears up against clutches that mate against the housing.
Power is transmitted through the spider gears forced against the
housing. There is constant spring pressure, so both wheels always
spin at the same time, but the springs release tension when making a
turn, allowing the clutches to slip which in turn allow one wheel to
spin faster than the other.
-
POSI/Limited Slip (Cone type)
- The ring gear spins the carrier, a series of springs forces the 2
spider gears up against cones that create friction on the carrier
housing. Power is transmitted through the cones forced against the
housing. There is constant spring pressure, so both wheels always
spin at the same time, but the springs release tension on the cones when
making a turn, allowing the cones to slip which in turn allow one wheel
to spin faster than the other.
-
TORSEN - The ring gear
spins the carrier, power is transmitted through a series of worm gears
that "climb" on each other as torque increases. When the worm
gears reach the spline gears, both axles are locked together through the
worm gears.

Carrier Series |
|
 |
Most 3-series gears have a small
pinion tooth count, which makes the pinion small in diameter. Small
diameter pinions require the ring gear to be closer to the pinion for the
gears to mesh. In other words, if you install a 3-series gear on a
2-series carrier, the ring and pinion won't mesh. |
