Bell housings are required to adapt
a certain transmission to a certain engines. Not all bell housings
interchange, as there are several different factors that determine which bell
housing is needed for your application.
- Engine Family - Each bell housing fits a
particular engine (engine bolt pattern).
- Transmission Family - Each bell housing fits
a certain transmission (T10, Super T10, Muncie, T5, T56, etc)
- 4-speeds - T10, Super T10, Muncie and
Saginaw. These transmission sit straight and level, although they
have the same bolt pattern as a T5.
- 5-speeds - T5 (short shaft).
These transmissions sit on an angle, and require a T5 bell housing to be
bolted to the transmission crossmember. They have the same bolt
pattern as a 4-speed.
- 5-speeds - T5 (long shaft).
These transmissions sit on an angle, and require a T5 bell housing to be
bolted to the transmission crossmember. They do not have the same
bolt pattern as a 4-speed.
- 6-speeds - T56. These transmissions
use their own bell housing and do not interchange with any other
transmission family.
- Linkage Type - Each bell housing can only use
a certain type of linkage.
- Mechanical - Uses a Z-bar and standard
mechanical rods that actuate a clutch fork.
- Hydraulic (slave cylinder) - Uses
a hydraulic master cylinder and hydraulic slave cylinder that actuates a
clutch fork.
- Hydraulic (throw out bearing) -
Uses a hydraulic master cylinder and hydraulic throw out bearing.
Doesn't use any sort of clutch fork, as the bearing is bolted to the
transmission.
